Abstract Do social norms mediate the impact of structural transformation on female labor outcomes? I study this question in the context of India’s national rural electrification program. Using detailed information on employment, firm ownership, baseline school enrollment and social norms across over 500,000 villages, I first estimate aggregate impacts: a 4% increase in the share of firms employing women and a 5% increase in the female share of non-agricultural labor.
